| Notes for Ellis Leonard ANDREWS | ||||||||||||||||
| He was a farmer all of his life. He attended school through the eight grade. He was the substitute mail carrier. He drove a team of horses on either a sled or a buggy. Before he left at night in the winter, he would heat a large rock all day and take it with him to keep him warm. He was wrapped in a large buffalo robe. Probably one of the best farmer's in the county and could grow when nobody else could. This is due in part to a crop rotation to keep the soil fertile. He farmed at a time before fertilizer or weedicides. He farmed most of his life using horses and didn't get a tractor until about 1939. He would cut ice down in the Missouri river during the winter, bring it up by wagon to the ice house where it was covered with sawdust until it was needed for the icebox in the summer. His kids would carry in the ice, and carry out the drip pan about once a day. He had a good four horsed team which he used to farm and grade roads for the county. In later years he had a road grader which belonged to the county. He would plow the dirt roads in the winter and grade them in the summer. -Elden '91 | ||||||||||||||||
